Granite Care - Overview
Loved for its distinctive look, granite is recognizable because of its heavy crystalline and granular appearance. It is also popular because it’s a very hard material and is easier to maintain than marble. Don’t be misled – you still need to be careful! Granite is a porous stone and will stain if it hasn’t been sealed properly.
An igneous stone, granite is mainly formed through volcanic material such as magma. Liquid magma cools underneath the earth’s surface where mineral gases and liquids penetrate the stone to create crystalline formations, resulting in various colors. There are different types of granite with varying amounts of quartz, mica and feldspar. Although all durable, their porosity varies with fine-grained granites being more absorbent than others.
All granite countertops should be sealed with a stone sealer to protect against water and oil-based spills. Granite floors need to be cleaned with a stone floor cleaner. Flamed/thermal granite can be enhanced and protected by using a color enhancer and cleaned with a stone deep cleaner. For polished granite countertops, clean with a countertop cleaner and provide additional protection with a countertop polish.
