Travertine Care - Overview
Classified as both limestone and marble, organic elements such as glaciers, rivers, wind, oceans and plants all contribute to the forming of Travertine. Travertine is a sedimentary stone, formed through the accumulation of calcite from hot springs. Its characteristic texture is formed from sulfur bubbles eating away at the stone.
In some Travertine stones where these natural indentations may be a bit larger, synthetic resins or cements are used to smooth the surface. Polished Travertine can look inconsistent as these synthetic fillers don’t polish as well as natural stone. Some Travertine can be successfully polished and others cannot.
Travertine can require various maintenance needs depending upon the stone you have. This stone is ideal for exterior surfaces, floor tile, kitchen flooring, bathroom wall tile and bathroom floor tile. The reason travertine’s maintenance can vary depends upon its exposure to moisture and spilled liquids. Regular cleaning with Tile Guard® Natural Stone Floor Cleaner will keep your floors looking like new.
Although millions of years of heat and pressure make Travertine durable, this stone is extremely absorbent. ALL Travertine must be periodically sealed to protect them from water and oil-based stains. Our Natural Stone Premium Sealer provides excellent protection for this very unique surface.
